Congratulations on an outstanding X# Summit

Post by OhioJoe »

Many thanks to presenters Robert, Nikos, Rolf and Steve for their well-prepared, enlightening sessions. Thanks also to our hosts at QLAdmin, particularly to Kat who arranged it all. (Kat, I don't think I've ever enjoyed more fantastic food in a 48-hour span.)

The takeaway is crystal clear: X# isn't merely a legacy bridge; Robert and his team have created a new development platform.

I'm a believer. Which means the brilliant X-sharpers on this forum are about to discover a new form of amusement in the simple-minded posts that will appear as I struggle to convert my various VO apps.

I wouldn't describe it as a rodeo. More like a pony ride at the kiddie corral.

To anyone getting started the compiler errors are many and daunting. Almost enough to keep the faint-of-heart from even trying.

One thing I learned in Austin is that it's best to resolve as many errors as possible on the VO side. So a good place to start would be to gather and post a list of the specific VO changes that need to be made. If such a comprehensive list exists here (sorry I haven't looked yet) please point me to it.

The larger issue here is something that will benefit everyone: building the user base and eventually moving X# into the mainstream. Which starts by mapping the path for newbies.

Joe, can you please list some of the error messages you were getting?

Wolfgang: thank you, sir. I'll go through it and respond with specific questions and ideas.

Chris: I will prepare a list for you.

Should we move this discussion from "chit chat" to another topic on the forum?

It's OK, Robert can move the whole thread if needed. Thanks, waiting to see the list, just to make sure if those are things that definitely need to be changed, or maybe we could adjust X# to deal with them with no changes. We've made plenty such adjustments already in the previous months!

Hi Joe,

I have about 2,5 milions of lines of VO code, and at least the half of them has to be converted to X# the next years.... And I have done a lot of things that are hard to move.

Joe,

Thanks for the nice words.
Why not simply start a new thread in another forum, for example the Product forum?
I can also move some posts from this thread, let me know what you want.

And here are some more nice words (before I forget):
Am I correct in recalling that you were the main developer of Visual Objects 2.8 SP3 ?
If you were, it's safe to say that in an industry full of pretenders, Robert is the Real Deal.
That version was incredibly stable. Haven't had a speck of database corruption ever since.
